About PGS

PGS views its professionals and their services as an integral part of the team that provides the total care to the residents. As team members, PGS professionals provide a number of additional services to facilities and their staff aimed at enhancing communication and assuring that psychiatric care complements the resident's overall care plan.

Experienced Clinicians

To assure that all care is integrated and appropriate, PGS employs or retains professionals that meet the following criteria:

Training in geriatrics

The unique presentations of psychopathology, when accompanied by dementia or medical complications, require that effective psychopharmacological treatment be provided by psychiatrists and nurse clinicians with training and/or with experience in treating the elderly.

Local Practice

PGS hires clinicians who have experience providing mental health services in Maryland. This emphasis assures the facility that the psychiatrists with PGS have knowledge of the community, acquaintance with other physicians in the community, and a thorough knowledge of the community's practices and standards as well as available resources.

Consistent Staffing

PGS professionals, psychiatrists and allied mental health professionals must agree to visit facilities on a routine and scheduled basis. This provides consistency to both residents and staff. Facility staff know whom to expect and when they can expect them.

Credentials

All PGS professionals must meet exacting credentialing requirements in terms of education, licensure, and professional liability coverage and history.

Responsiveness

PGS psychiatrists and management team are committed to responding to urgent patient care needs 7 days per week and 365 days per year.

Competitive Advantages

The PGS system-based approach offers many distinct advantages to long-term care facilities. We believe the following are the most important:

PGS offers mental health care that addresses the needs of resident and facility. Residents and staff know what to expect in terms of the delivery of psychiatric care because care is delivered by the same professional on a routine basis. When the need arises, PGS is responsive and flexible and can modify service delivery as appropriate.

PGS also offers systematized documentation and reporting. PGS monitors and evaluates the care it provides in a manner that assists the facility in meeting reporting requirements by payers and certifying agencies. PGS documents the rationale for care in each case and measures the outcome. Ultimately this contributes to improving the delivery of care and the milieu of the facility.

PGS supplies each unit of a facility with clinical management resources to ease the burden of referral, enhance communication and ensure that information on behavioral management is immediately available to the staff at all times.

The multidisciplinary team of PGS provides consistent mental health program delivered across multiple facility organizations. This has positive implications for locating the most appropriate care for patients when acute or unique patient needs arise as well as providing opportunities for collegial collaboration and service coverage.
